7th Gurkha Rifles was raised in 1902 and recruited from the Rai and Limbu clans in the foothills of East Nepal. Gurkha literally means ‘defender of cows’. Its soldiers had first been absorbed into the British Army in 1816 after the East India Company, in a particularly difficult war against the Nepalese hill men, were impressed by their military qualities. 1/7th Gurkha Rifles fought in Mesopotamia (modern Iraq) and Palestine throughout the First World War. During the Second World War it served with distinction in Burma Corps when it took part in the longest retreat the British Army has ever undertaken through the jungle from Rangoon to India.
