There’s a chance that it will take you somewhere nice, but the likelihood of ending up in Corfu or Hawaii or somewhere similar is pretty slight. A better approach is to work out where you want to be, and then work backwards from that end point; if you have decided that you want to go to Hawaii, then you can start choosing the dates, flights and accommodation which will get you to that goal. It’s the same with other things in your life, such as what sort of job you want, where you want to work, what you want to do with your life, and so on.

People who have clearly worked-out goals can withstand a lot of stress because they keep the goal in sight. Suppose you want to pursue your interest in mazes (or motor racing, or whatever else your hobby may be). That is too vague to be a goal. You need to refine it so that it is SMART: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Time-limited. Making it Specific could be ‘To visit the most interesting mazes in Europe’; Measurable would be identifying which those were, and listing them. To make sure this was Achievable you’d need to work out whether there were any practical blockers, such as one of those mazes being in the middle of a long-running war zone.

Spend time on things that are important to you, and you will be less stressed. It also helps to work out what you would do if you met obstacles along the way to your goal. You can brainstorm possible setbacks, then think about how you would get round them. You will then be prepared for most eventualities and have plan B (and C) in place. If you wait until there is a crisis, you will have to decide what to do whilst under pressure, which is seldom fun and which rarely leads to good decisions. It’s better to make the contingency plans in advance, when you are calm and have plenty of time.
