Indeed it was here in Scotland, which escaped the Norman conquest, that the Anglian language was preserved in its purest form. From about 700 an equilibrium was established, with Bernicia occupying the lands south of the Forth and Pictish Fortriu dominating those to the north, including, for much of the period, the Gaelic kingdom of Dál Riata. It may have been as a result of Pictish domination of Argyll, from about 740 onwards, that the Dál Riatan territories in Antrim went their own way, although we do not know this for sure.

The royal family had been wiped out and, rather than fight the Vikings, what was left of the Pictish nobility engaged in a 42 IN SEARCH OF SCOTLAND bloody civil war for ten years. At the end of this time a nobleman from Dál Riata, Cinaed son of Alp´ın (d. 858), known to posterity as Kenneth MacAlpine, emerged as King of the Picts. By this time, Dál Riata had been a sub-kingdom of the Pictish empire for a century and it is unlikely that contemporaries saw Cinaed’s rise to power as a sharp break with Pictish tradition.

Instead the dividing line between Britons and Picts emerged along the Forth, so that groups like the Votadini of Lothian, who never had a Roman villa in their B I RT H O F A NAT I O N 31 territory, saw themselves as having more in common with the Romanised south than with the Pictish north. The chieftains of these tribes between the Walls had clearly benefited from the protection afforded them by the empire, and had perhaps developed a taste for wine and other southern luxuries. By the time the Romans left, these northern Britons also seem to have adopted Christianity, the religion of the later Roman army.
