1. S. Plains began food production amidst controversy as to whether this region of highly variable weather could ever sustain high food productivity(8). After the early success during the Homestead era of the late 1800s, drought in the 1890s created serious outmigration of farm settlers and began a pattern of "boom and bust" farming, where good weather years and high production were followed by drought years bringing economic ruin and serious episodes of soil erosion. The most severe drought occurred in the 1930s, known to history as the "dust bowl era".
