This version of the game was called ‘Apple Bobbing’. Shrove Tuesday was a favourite day. We could look forward to a dessert of delicious pancakes, coated with glistening sugar and spiced with lemon. At Urban Road Primary School in Sale, a teacher would bring a container of cooked pancakes into the playground and toss them high into the air.
