In a later court action, it was found that publication would affect national security in only 27 passages. Further legal appeals by the CIA, however, resulted in the book being issued with the full 168 deletions. The Supreme Court refused to intervene in the Marchetti case, letting stand the lower court's ruling permitting extensive censorship by the CIA. Another dimension was added in 1975 by a second book about the CIA, Inside the Company, published in England. This work is subject to seizure on entering the United States.

A much publicized case in 1974 occurred in Kanawha County, West Virginia, where fundamentalists raised loud and demonstrative protests against the school board's adoption of "un-Godly and un-American" textbooks, deemed unfit for their children. At issue was a series of textbooks primarily for high school English literature and language skillsbooks which included selections from works by Eldridge Cleaver, Malcolm X, allen Ginsberg, and Gwendolyn Brooks. Dissident parents kept their children out of school for over nine weeks, led boycotts, inspired coal mine strikes, and led a march on the state capital.
