It is made up of seven smaller districts, Śródmieście being the central one. In the pages that follow, however, Warsaw is divided into three parts: the Old and New Towns, the Royal Route and the City Centre. The most interesting historical features of Warsaw are located along the Royal Route (Trakt Królewski), a series of roads linking the Old Town (Stare Miasto) and the Royal Castle (Zamek Królewski) with the Water Palace (Łazienki) and Wilanów, the palace of Jan III Sobieski, which stands just outside the city.

Today it is one of the most attractive places in Warsaw. From spring to autumn it is filled with café tables, and also becomes an open-air gallery of contemporary art. On the square and in neighbouring streets, especially Piwna and Jezuicka, there are numerous restaurants and bars that are reputed to be the best in Warsaw. The whole of the Old Town is not only a tourist attraction but also a favourite place for local people, who go to walk there, and for lovers to meet.
