Its close relative, Lumholtz’s treekangaroo, is also found in the park. Another nocturnal creature, the Daintree River ringtail possum, is found in rainforest elevations over 420 metres and feeds on leaves from a wide range of species – including bleeding heart, pink almond and needlebark – and the fruit of the green-leaved Moreton Bay fig. This possum shelters during the day in tree hollows and amid the staghorn ferns. Those looking for a daytime encounter with a rare marsupial should keep their eyes peeled for the adorable musky rat-kangaroo, which looks very much like a miniature kangaroo-rat hybrid.
Along its 30-kilometre length are numerous, narrow side gorges – complete with waterfalls, pockets of rainforest and natural wonders such as the Moss Garden, the quiet, almost claustrophobic Amphitheatre and Ward's Canyon, with its ancient king ferns. By contrast, the Mount Moffat, Salvator Rosa and Ka Ka Mundi sections of the park are characterised by grassy plateaus and sandstone cliffs, bluffs and spires. Native plants Hundreds of plant species thrive in Carnarvon Gorge, which shelters endemic cabbage palms (Livistona nitida), ancient cycads, ferns, flowering shrubs and gums.
The national park was declared in 1940 and in 1988 it received its listing as part of the Wet Tropics World Heritage Area. The Skyrail Rainforest Cableway was completed in 1995. Natural features The national park encloses a wild river valley that plunges steeply down the side of the Atherton Tableland towards the coastal plain north of Cairns. The stunning Barron Gorge, carved by the Barron River, has created a truly spectacular landscape in the mountainous terrain. The falls are located at the top of the gorge, around 5 kilometres from the hillside town of Kuranda.
