Resistance is derived from a variety of sources, including red and black raspberries. Keep (1989) indicated that these aphid resistance genes have been effective in slowing the spread of aphid-vectored viruses in the red raspberry at EMR. Also, at the SCRI, virus infection rates in resistant cultivars was less than 10%, while susceptible plants became completely infected within 3 years (Jones, 1976). In North America, the primary vector of the raspberry mosaic virus complex is the large raspberry aphid Amphorophora agathonica Hottes.
The top flower cluster is the smallest and the lowest one is the largest. Flowering is correlated to cane height, usually 40–50 nodes with the first flowers opening in late June (‘Autumn Bliss’ in Ohio) to mid-July, followed by the first fruits ripening in late July to mid-August, depending on cultivar. Days from flowering to first harvest, as with the floricane-fruiting types, are subject to significant environmental effects, but as temperatures are often cooler they vary from 4 to 10 weeks or more. Productivity is highly correlated with cane growth and with temperatures.
